Visiting Aughrim Co Wicklow:

wicklow photos from chris bolton -living life the wicklow wayMaccreddins' Farmers Market is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike in the beautiful village of Aughrim.

As you drive into Aughrim co wicklow (well, I can't drive because I'm a dog but I do have a very helpful human to drive me around) you cannot help but immediately notice the beauty of this village.

Aughrim lies in an incredibly scenic valley where the Ow & Derry rivers meet to form the Aughrim river. On the rivers' bridging , Anne Devlin is commemorated for her loyal support to Robert Emmet having endured imprisonment and torture at kilmainham Gaol in Dublin (1798 Rebellion).

The village was a granite mining village and this is obvious in the many unusual granite terraced houses. It is a popular resting point for the many walkers of the Sean Lenihan Way, which provides woodlands and riverside walks in the valleys of the Three Wells and Macreddin Brooks.

There is also an artificial lake nearby stocked with rainbow trout for your (put & take) fishing pleasure, surrounded by beautiful wildlife accessible to all as it is a national disabled angling facility and is open year round. Phone 00 353 402 36552 for details.

Aughrim sports an enthusiastic gaa club with the county grounds located here and was packed out for the recent Wicklow-Dublin match where Mick O'Dwyers team unfortunately missed out on a 3rd win in a row (hatrick) since his recent appointment as manager of the Wicklow senior football team. (www.gaa.ie) If they'd only let dogs play I could've helped I'm sure-(well maybe not! I am terribly fond of my treats!)

For unbeatable home produce why not pad down to the pavillion in the park, Rednagh Road every Saturday Morning between 11am -2pm (oh these early risers!) for The Country Fair where you can stock yourself silly with local fare!

Plentiful bars and cafes ensure you won't go hungry and many a romantic couple plan their special day celebrations in Aughrim as there is a variety of venues suited to weddings such as the charming Ballybeg house, well equipped Lawless's hotel and the fabulous luxury of The Brooklodge Hotel in Macreddin village to name but a few!

Speaking of Macreddin they host the very popular Sunday Markets on the first Sunday of every month from March to October featuring:

  • Great Food Stalls
  • Artisan Food Suppliers
  • The Nigel Mooney Jazz Band
  • Brilliant Barbeques & Bars
  • Seating for 100's
