Avoca Co Wicklow

Visiting Avoca Co Wicklow:

Well known as the village for the popular Ballykissangel series ( and now the now not so new Rough diamond series), Avoca in co wicklow is an old mining village which is simply gorgeously located in a beautiful tree lined valley along the Avoca river.

Avoca is immortalised in the famous song The Meeting of the Waters by Thomas Moore. Located in the village is Avoca Handweavers, the oldest working mill in Ireland today which dates from 1723 (before my time for sure!) Visitors can watch the entire weaving process and purchase quality Irish knits in the gift and knitwear shop.

There are picturesque river walks, tea and cakes to be had in the meetings of the water pub/restaurant, trout fishing (dinner?) souvenier shops and the woodenbrige golf course is nearby.

The Mottee Stone is to be found signposted here on the Avoca-Rathdrum Road just beyond the meetings-of-the-waters; go up a trackway to the hilltops summit. The stone lies halfway between Dublin and Wexford and legend has it that Fionn MacCumhaill ( stories of Old Ireland for Children by Eddie Lenihan features our Fionn!) hurled the stone from the top of the Lugnaquilla mountain ( he must have eaten his greens!!)

I don't know about you but I am prone to a spot of gambling every so often and a weekly trip to the local Bingo every Wednesday night in the Parish hall at 8.30pm fulfils my need!
